YMMV's Two-Window Browsing System

The Daily Links page now offers two-window browsing on most JavaScript-enabled browsers. To activate it, check the checkbox in the left margin of the page. To deactivate it, uncheck the box. Because the two-window feature is built using JavaScript, you won't see the checkbox (or the link to thse instructions) if your browser doesn't support JavaScript.

To make the most effective use of the two-window feature, don't close the secondary window which opens when you first click on a foreign link. Instead, leave it open and move it to a convenient spot on your screen.  (You can let the two windows overlap or not, depending on how much available screen space you have.) Then, pick the next link you want to see from the Daily Links page. Whenever you click on a link that goes offsite, the secondary window will be updated and will get the focus. (On Windows and Macintosh systems, this will also bring the secondary window to the front. On UNIX systems it might or might not do that, depending on which window manager and browser you're using.)

Once you get used to this technique, you'll appreciate the convenience of not losing your place or having to hit "back" to return to the Daily Links page. You'll also save time, because your browser won't have to re-render the page of links. And you'll save us bandwidth, because your browser won't need to query our server every time you return.

If you  prefer one-window viewing, or have trouble with JavaScript incompatibilities (Microsoft's browsers, in particular, do strange things on some systems), you can turn off the two-window feature in one of two ways: uncheck the checkbox (the default) or turn off JavaScript.
